Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam had a festive start during the official launch party of Zalando presents 10 Days Downtown: 'Fashion is WOW' in de Marktkantine.
Designer Bas Kosters paid tribute to fashion in collaboration with Fashionchick, by being the curator of 'Fashion is WOW'. The whole of fashionable the Netherlands celebrated their passion for fashion while dancing to the music of Mike Mago, Doppelgang, Cat Carpenters and Rachel Green.
Next to the show of Bas Kosters there were 3 young talents at the party who showed their collections. The first designer was Fiorella Dreier Gligoor who studied Fashion & Design at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. Her collection is called 'Survival of the Prettiest' and inspired by sexual selection of Paradise Birds. Focussed on the vital moment where they have to expose everything they have; their colours, movements and shapes. It's an ode to the beauty of nature and a celebration of self-expression!
Esther Haamke, the second designer, launched her label end of January 2015 in Amsterdam. After her studies in illustration, she went to Antwerp to study fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Nevertheless illustration stays one of the most important things in her work and colourful prints are the main ingredient in her collections.
For her collection “Snake Preview” Esther created an oasis of colours and fun. The collection is about staying positive when you feel lost and orienting yourself to the stars. It is a mixture of glamour and streetwear and is Inspired by the beautiful details of the orient, snake charmers and the 80's. Being lost in a playful way; Dancing cobras, prickly cactuses while following the stars!
The last designer Kim Philipsen just graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts . Where I discovered my love and passion for prints, textiles and material experiments. Her collection is called “MISERY LOVES COMPANY”. The inspiration of her collection 'MISERY LOVES COMPANY' were the pictures of VIOLETT, a girl taking pictures of herself. From the pictures, Kim felt a certain drama, sadness and discomfort. This was the inducement for the concept of her collection for a group of dilapidated women whom share each other's misery. Kim also added a certain awkwardness to the designs, which the wearer does not experience as an obstacle, but to the viewer it might seem as a hindrance.
From this, an elegant collection with an edgy feeling originated. Kim Philipsen loves to make her own material and by that create an unique atmosphere. She’s experimented with many techniques like weaving, embroidery, prints and dyed fabrics by hand.
